Our travel guides to Italy
Italy is quite simply the most complete European destination. Art, architecture, food, landscapes, history: every region is a world in itself. From Rome and its ancient ruins to Florence and its Renaissance, from the Amalfi coast to the Cinque Terre, and from the canals of Venice to the trulli of Puglia, Italy is a country you never truly finish discovering.
For backpackers, Italy is perfect thanks to its extensive rail network. Trenitalia and Italo trains connect all the major cities, often at very competitive prices if you book in advance (Milan-Rome starts at just 19 euros on high-speed lines). Regional trains are even cheaper and give you easy access to the small towns and villages that make the country so charming.

About our Travel Guides
Your travel budget in Italy will vary quite a bit depending on where you go. Highly popular spots like Venice, the Amalfi Coast, and the Cinque Terre in high season can get pricey. On the other hand, the south (Puglia, Sicily, Calabria) and mid-sized cities (Bologna, Turin, Genoa) offer fantastic value for money. Budget about 35 to 50 euros per day for two if you are backpacking. Neighborhood pizzerias (where you can grab a pizza for 5-8 euros), the local aperitivo culture (a 5-euro spritz that comes with a free buffet), and food markets will be your absolute best friends.
The best time to visit Italy is during the spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October). If you can, avoid August: locals take their own holidays then, beaches are packed, and many city restaurants shut down for the month.
