Vicuña and the Elqui Valley: our guide to making sure you don't miss a thing

Pisco, stars and the Chilean end of the world: welcome to one of the most charming villages in northern Chili.

Just 1h30 from La Serena, Vicuña is just far enough away to be remembered for a long time. A quiet village nestled in the heart of the Elqui Valley, it is both the birthplace of Chilean pisco, the birthplace of poet Gabriela Mistral, and above all one of the best places in the world to observe the stars. And in the off-season, all of that almost entirely to yourself.

Vicuña at a glance - What you should know before arriving

Founded in 1821, Vicuña is a small town in the Coquimbo region that looks unremarkable from the road, but hides a strong identity. It is first known as the heart of Chilean pisco production, this muscat grape spirit that is the subject of a friendly but persistent rivalry with neighboring Peru. The Elqui Valley, irrigated and lush in the middle of arid hills, concentrates nearly all the vineyards used for its production.

But Vicuña is also, and above all, the birthplace of Gabriela Mistral, born in 1889, the first Latin American woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1945. Poet, educator, and diplomat, she devoted much of her work to childhood, pain, and Chilean identity. Her face now appears on the 5,000 Chilean peso bill, and Vicuña pays tribute to her with a quiet pride that you will feel as soon as you take your first steps in the city.

Vicūna

What is certain is that Vicuña is a town that is best visited out of season. Fewer tourists, almost deserted activities, and an authentic atmosphere that really lets you soak up the local rhythm. We recommend at least 3 days there, and up to 5 if you want to really settle in.

Practical tip: From La Serena bus station, the bus ride to Vicuña cost around €5 in April 2026. Simple, quick and affordable.

Where to stay in Vicuña - Our 3 recommended hostels

We really fell in love with the Michal hostel: excellent cuisine, a large outdoor space, and a warm atmosphere that makes you want to stay one more day. It's our top recommendation.

If Michal is full, the Donde Rita hostel is described as very similar in terms of quality and atmosphere, a good alternative.

For tighter budgets, the Scorpius hostel is a little cheaper, but with fewer facilities and a smaller outdoor space.

Plan B: If the three inns are full during high season, consider booking well in advance. The valley attracts many visitors during the Chilean summer (December-February).

Stargazing - The highlight of the show

This is the main reason why people come to Vicuña. The Elqui Valley is among the least light-polluted areas in the world, and the sky here is exceptional. You have two options depending on your budget and preferences.

Elki Magic - Our recommendation for French speakers

If you don't speak Spanish very well, this is clearly the option to choose. Elki Magic offers an observing session with an enthusiast, using professional equipment, in a small group. A drink is included, and the evening is as educational as it is poetic - you leave knowing how to find your way around the southern sky.

Expect 25,000 Chilean pesos per person (about 25-27€ in April 2026). It's a bit more expensive than Mamalluca, but the small group makes all the difference.

For more information: Elki Magic also offers bike rentals and car excursions in the region at very good prices. Be sure to ask about their lunch discounts at the Solar restaurant!

Mamalluca Observatory - The municipal option

Mamalluca Observatory belongs to the city of Vicuña and offers interesting facilities: two types of telescopes, sessions in Spanish and English, and content as comprehensive as Elki Magic.

The main advantage: the price. 15,000 Chilean pesos per person (about €15–16 in April 2026).

On the other hand, in high season, groups can reach 40 people, which detracts a bit from the magic. In the low season, you will be in a small group and will enjoy it much more.

Tip: If you visit in the low season, Mamalluca is excellent value for money. In high season, prefer Elki Magic for a more intimate experience.

Cycling through the valley - 2 detailed routes

Biking is the best way to explore the valley at your own pace. Elki Magic offers rentals, and the following routes are perfectly suited to both levels.

Circuit 1 - The artisans’ walk (4 to 5h)

An accessible route, on mostly flat roads along the mountainside. The program:

  • Departure from Vicuña

  • Stop at an artisanal pisco house (tour and tasting included)

  • Bike ride to a nearby village for a well-deserved ice cream

  • Return by another route, passing by a craft brewery

  • Optional lunch at Solar restaurant (short but real uphill climb - it has to be earned!)

Tip: If you rent through Elki Magic, ask them for their discount on lunch at Solar restaurant. The lunch menu was 8,000 pesos (about €8) in April 2026, and it is excellent.

Circuit 2 - The Great Crossing of the Valley (7 to 8h)

A more challenging route, which starts with a bus ride with your bike to Horcón, then you head back toward Vicuña passing through several villages, each with its local specialties (beer, pisco...). The highlight: a swimming stop in Monte Grande, perfect for taking a breather before the final stretch.

Plan B : This route is not recommended if you're not used to cycling long distances. In that case, do route 1 and come back on a second day if you feel like going further.

The museums of Vicuña

Gabriela Mistral Museum

Gabriela Mistral was born in Vicuña in 1889. A teacher by training, she began writing poetry at a very young age, shaped by a painful personal life. Her collection "Desolación", published in 1922, introduced her to the Spanish-speaking world. In 1945, she became the first person from Latin America to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, an immense recognition for a woman who had never stopped teaching and fighting for the education of poor children. The museum in Vicuña pays her a modest and touching tribute, with personal objects, manuscripts, and testimonies that help us understand the full scope of her work and her life.

Entomological Museum

A more surprising museum, dedicated to insects and the history of dinosaurs. Small but well thought out, and above all affordable: 1,000 pesos only (less than €1). A good half hour to spend in an unexpected way.

Where to eat in Vicuña

The city is not a major food destination, but a few places are really worth stopping at. For those on a budget, the UniMarc supermarket offers a wide selection at reasonable prices.

Restaurant Jagannath Prashadam - Creative and original vegan cuisine, with dishes rarely seen in the region. Good value for money and a real culinary identity.

Cuoca Yasna Ristorante - For those nostalgic for Italy (or simply for a good risotto or lasagna). A comforting place after a few days of local cuisine.

Con Sabor Peruano - A Peruvian restaurant to discover the specialties of the neighboring country before you even set foot there, or to find familiar flavors if you come from Lima.
