The 13km-long Paseo Maru00edtimo in La Corogne is perfect for a long, leisurely walk to discover the different architectural styles that have shaped the city over the years. Make sure to head past the "galleries" u2014 those unique building facades built in the 19th century. They've earned the city quite a few nicknames and act as natural solar greenhouses, keeping things nice and warm by soaking up the daytime sun.
The Tower of Hercules
The Tower of Hercules is the only Roman lighthouse—and the oldest lighthouse in the world—that is still working today. Legend has it that the mythical hero Hercules arrived here by boat and buried the head of a giant he had defeated in battle. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since June 27, 2009.
Tickets to visit the Tower of Hercules can be purchased on-site or online through the lighthouse’s official website. General admission is 3 € and the reduced rate is 1,50 €.
Admission is free on Mondays, but you’ll still need to get a ticket.
Opening hours are from 9:45 am to 5:00 pm in autumn and winter, and from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm in spring and summer.
Fun fact: This tower is twinned with the Statue of Liberty in New York and the El Morro lighthouse in Havana.
A stroll through the old town
Made up of a maze of narrow medieval streets, the old town of A Coruña is a labyrinth surrounded by ancient walls, where you can spot a touch of Breton influence. In fact, the history of Breton fishermen is closely linked to this city, which was a regular stop on their maritime routes.
This labyrinth opens up onto Maria Pita Square, where you'll find the majestic City Hall and the statue of María Pita, who led the city's resistance against the attack of the English Armada in 1589.
Museum of Modern Art
The building was constructed on the ruins of the 18th-century Capuchin Convent. It houses a collection of over 5,000 works charting artistic evolution from the 15th century to the present day.
Admission tickets are €2.40, with discounted rates of €1.40 or free entry available depending on eligibility. Visiting hours are Tuesday to Friday from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm, and Saturday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm and again from 4:30 pm to 8:00 pm.
