Although, at first glance, the city of Gijon might seem a bit grey compared to other Spanish destinations, it actually boasts a rich history and some wonderful walks. We've put together a handy little list of the absolute must-sees when you come to visit Gijon!
Kick off your visit at the Plaza del Marqués, a square steeped in rich history and bursting with local culture. It's surrounded by museums and historic sights, serving as the gateway to the old town's charming streets. There, you'll find a 134-year-old sculpture and fountain dedicated to Carlos Menéndez Valdés.
The Roman Baths
Entry to this Roman baths museum is free and offers a short underground path where you can learn more about the city's history and its Roman inhabitants of the era.
The beaches of San Lorezo
Gijon is a port city that you can easily explore by following the seafront. San Lorenzo beach is the most popular and spacious stretch of sand here. You can take a dip in the summer, while autumn and winter bring out plenty of local surfers.
Cerro de Santa Catalina
This walk across the hill will take you to the most beautiful viewpoint in the city. It's a lovely, easy-going stroll and very easy to access.
